Botanical Oils

When we think of massage oils, our mind often goes directly to the amazing scents and aromatherapy properties of essential oils. They are a popular addition to enhance your massage session. Did you know, however, that a properly blended massage oil or lotion uses a few drops of essential oil at best? Yes, with these highly concentrated essential oils, less really is more.

What we drop those essentials into, is being applied liberally to your whole body. It amazes me that we, as an industry, do not put a lot of time or effort into learning about what it is we are using, how it affects your body, and the massage we are giving.

Years ago, I took a deep dive into these carrier oils. I now call them botanical oils because they are so much more than a vessel in which to carry your aromatherapy.

Every botanical oil has it's own energy and medicine. Every botanical oil has it's own unique makeup of fatty acids and unsaponifiables that tell a story about where it's from and how it can benefit us. Each oil has a different color, texture, and feel on the skin. Each oil blended with another, just for your skin. creates a little bit of magic.

Working with these oils for years now, I am able to blend both my knowledge of the botanical oils, my experience, intuition, and your goals for a session to create a custom blended massage oil for each client included in the cost of your session. This service is unique to our studio and offers a look into the passion and truly curated care we strive to offer all of our clients.

How does it work?

After your consultation, I will chat about the blend I think will be right for you, and we will begin the ritual of choosing the right aromatherapy to include for a deeply special and dynamic oil.

At Sanctuary Massage here in Rotterdam NY, we use a combination of Botanical Oils (we sometimes call these lipids or lipid oils, and these are often referred to as carrier oils.) including butters, and waxes, as well as herbally infused oils.
